National Survey and Segmentation of Smallholder Households in Tanzania: Understanding Their Demand for Financial, Agricultural, and Digital Solutions

Examining how smallholder families manage their income and expenses

In close collaboration with the Financial Sector Deepening Trust–Tanzania (FSDT), CGAP conducted a nationally representative survey of smallholder households between August and September 2015. This study sought to develop a comprehensive map of the many activities, interests, aspirations, barriers, and pressures facing smallholder families. The report shares the findings, observations, and insights from the national survey of smallholder households in Tanzania.

This comprehensive exploration of the lives of smallholder households sought to answer the following three questions:

  1. What does the community of practice need to know or do to support smallholder households build more resilient and productive livelihoods?
  2. How can financial mechanisms respond to the relevant needs and desires of smallholder households?
  3. What types of market strategies and approaches can cultivate uptake and use of financial mechanisms?
