Report on the Results from the CARD/Freedom from Hunger Client Assessment Approaches for Progress Tracking Workshop
This paper discusses results from the Freedom from Hunger workshop that was conducted by the Center for Agriculture and Rural Development (CARD). The results were obtained by conducting mini- surveys and participatory rapid appraisal (PRA) focus-group discussions.
The paper lists the following objectives of the mini-survey:
- Compare client knowledge and practice for branches that have and have not received the Freedom from Hunger education in the designated area;
- Establish a baseline measure for these four branches, to set targets and compare results after the introduction of education;
- Apply the Lot Quality Assurance Sampling (LQAS) approach to determine its feasibility as a management tool.
The paper identifies steps in the mini-survey which include training, sampling, conducting interviews, review and coding and summarizing and analyzing the results. The paper examines results in the areas of breastfeeding, family planning, giving good health and/or business advice, managing business money, selling strategies and business planning comparing CARD members who had received education services with those who had not. Similarly, the paper examines the objectives, methods and results of the PRA ranking focus group discussion.
The paper concludes by discussing:
- Staff suggestions for what CARD can learn and the actions to be taken;
- What is working well in pilot areas that should be expanded to other branches;
- Insight into unmet needs that suggest possible new or additional services.
