Reviewing India’s microfinance sector

This report reviews events and issues in India’s microfinance sector during the year 2010. It presents and discusses data on financial inclusion, outreach and other areas related to microfinance.

The report is organized into 11 chapters, each of which addresses a specific aspect of microfinance. These include:

  • Overview of macroeconomic context, and performance review of microfinance sector;
  • Performance of self-help group bank linkage program, and role of NABARD;
  • Performance of MFIs and issues related to moderation and monitoring of MFIs;
  • Investment climate and access to capital markets;
  • Microfinance in the global context;
  • Informal and formal sector related to savings, investment and pensions;
  • Policy environment and regulatory developments;
  • Application of technology in microfinance;
  • Social performance, transparency and responsible microfinance;
  • Issues in financial inclusion;
  • Agenda for the future.

The report states that the Indian microfinance sector needs to focus on sustaining its relevance to customer lives and livelihoods in order to mitigate risks and unfavourable policy interventions.
