Case Study

Analysis of Sustainability, Growth, and Development of a Leading Microfinance Institution in Bangladesh: Case Study on TMSS

Examining financial and operational information to analyze MFI sustainability

This case study analyzes the operations and growth of TMSS, an MFI working in 63 districts of Bangladesh.

TMSS projects include rural and urban microcredit, education, health, fisheries and livestock, human rights and gender, environment and forestry, social development, agriculture, disaster management and social business enterprise. Main features of TMSS operations include:

  • Program diversification in order to attain sustainability;
  • Development of institutions in the health and education sectors;
  • Focus on poverty alleviation and women's empowerment;
  • Enterprise development in rural and urban areas;
  • Insurance provision;
  • Promotion of agriculture and environment.

TMSS has a business friendly environment, strong inter-firm linkages, opportunities and support for upgrading that would enable it to compete in global markets. Its further development hinges on developing capacity in terms of knowledge and resources for upgrading, and use of ICT. It must integrate branches and create a central database. It needs to address the lack of sectoral disbursement with technical experts, and the motivation to serve in remote locations. Finally, TMSS must focus on other income generating activities, cost effective means of program diversification and methods to prevent credit misuse and multiple borrowings.
