Download 25 pages

This case study provides an overview of the growth and operations of Simbayanan ni Maria Multipurpose Cooperative (SMMPC), Philippines.

SMMPC was established in 1991 by Father Anton. It aimed to conduct socio-economic programs for improving the quality of life of the people of Lower Bicutan and adjacent villages in Taguig, Philippines. Specifically, its objectives were to:

  • Create funds for granting loans;
  • Procure and distribute commodities to members and non-members;
  • Undertake joint agricultural or industrial production;
  • Supply production inputs to members and help market the product;
  • Promote an integrated cooperative system as a way of life to improve the social and economic well-being of the people;
  • Work with the cooperative movement, non-government and government organizations in the development of cooperatives.

SMMPC's assets grew, membership equity increased and loan releases went up during the period 1991 to 1996. Factors that contributed to its growth include hiring trustworthy managers, increasing minimum loan size, training personnel and offering insurance. The case study raises questions about the future growth of the cooperative and ensuring its sustainability.
