Performance Indicators Sub-group

Works to develop standard key performance indicators for microinsurance, improving comparability of schemes for enhanced performance and greater transparency.

In 2007, the performance indicators sub-group organised its second successful practitioner workshop in Luxembourg, hosted by ADA, BRS and the performance indicator sub-group and attended by some 30 microinsurance managers. The purpose of this workshop was to further develop key performance indicators and the possibility of benchmarking.

A first workshop was held in October 2006. More than 20 microinsurance providers discussed and established a set of key principles and financial indicators for measuring microinsurance operations. The feedback and conclusions from this workshop have been used to refine the set of indicators and a handbook on how to use them is in production.

This refined set was tested and discussed during this second workshop. Furthermore, the elaboration of a toolkit consisting of a factsheet and handbook was discussed. A short summary note of this workshop is available in French, Spanish and English.

Based on these efforts, there is now a broad acceptance of microinsurance performance indicators, although the development of social indicators remains outstanding. The first version of the handbook is now available in English. Translations into French and Spanish will be available late summer. The performance indicator sub-group is requesting feedback on the draft by the end of the year and encourages everybody involved in microinsurance to use the key indicators and standards developed.

Next steps:

  • Finalise Handbook and tools by March 2008 - DONE
  • Disseminate information on performance indicators and tools
  • Organise microinsurance performance indicators workshops in Latin America, Asia and Africa
  • Develop Training of Trainer material
  • Organise an inclusive training on microinsurance, with the capacity building sub-group
