Dissemination Sub-group

Facilitates microinsurance experience and information sharing across the industry, including MFIs, insurance companies, donors and experts as to promote sound practices in the industry

Munich Re Foundation, in collaboration with the dissemination sub-group, organises the annual Microinsurance Conference.

The 2007 Microinsurance Conference was generally considered a success. The contributions from IRDA in cosponsoring the event, as well as the financial contributions from GTZ and the World Bank, were greatly appreciated. 300 people registered for the conference, from more than 50 countries (in 2006, there were only 160 people from 35 countries). The report of the Microinsurance Conference 2007 should be available in April 2008.

The 2008 Microinsurance Conference will be held from 5 to 7 November 2008 in Cartagena, Columbia. The format will be similar than that of 2007, perhaps with slightly fewer workshops. Following up on suggestions, there would be more space for publications tables, additional meeting points and message boards, and possibly space for stands.

The CGAP Working Group on Microinsurance co-sponsored other conferences in Brazil (May 2007, organised by the World Bank), Sri Lanka (June 2007, organised by ADB) and the Philippines (July 2007, organised by the Asian Insurance Review). About 350 people attended these events and Munich Re Foundation provided complementary copies of “Protecting the Poor: A Microinsurance Compendium” to all participants. In January 2008, the CGAP Working Group on Microinsurance will collaborate with IAIS, the World Bank and the Chinese authorities to organise a microinsurance conference in Beijing, and with the Financial Stability Institute (FSI) for a conference in September 2008, probably in Basel, for insurance supervisors and policymakers.

The dissemination sub-group manages the Microinsurance Focus website. The website is conceived as a resource centre for the promotion of sound practices in insurance provision to low-income persons through the exchange of knowledge and experience. It provides a broad range of information and resources including case studies and reports, documents and articles, tools and information on different service providers.

The sub-group also publishes the newsletter Microinsurance: Risk Management for the Poor. The Newsletter presents key topics and experiences in microinsurance and updates on the Working Group's activities. Registration to the mailing list of the newsletter at insurance@microfinance.lu

The sub-group furthermore publishes the Microinsurance in Focus notes, which are outcomes of the operation sub-group.
