The agriculture sub-group met for the first time at the annual meeting 2007 in Mumbai, India. At this meeting, the activities of members along with the future plans of members were discussed as well as the inclusion of new members.
In 2007, the Munich Re Foundation wrote a discussion paper entitled “Microinsurance Aspects in Agriculture” which was published in October 2007. In addition, the Ford Foundation has hired the MicroInsurance Centre to undertake a landscape survey on agriculture microinsurance and develop a website of resources consisting of relevant agricultural insurance papers and links to expertise on agricultural insurance in developing countries. The website will be accessible in the first quarter of 2008, and the paper in the second quarter of 2008. The intention is to use the paper to suggest future projects that could be undertaken by the subgroup.
The agricultural sub-group decided it would also work on issues of climate change related to agriculture. In the event that this topic moves away from agriculture, for example if the sub-group wishes to focus on the impact of climate change on coastal cities with respect to urban property insurance or life insurance and if there was sufficient interest, then a separate sub-group would be formed to deal with the topic.
The agriculture sub-group agreed to convene again the second quarter of 2008 to review the landscape report commissioned by the Ford Foundation and develop a work plan.
