This issue of the newsletter, Microinsurance, comprises the following sections:

The article, Developing a Legal Framework for Mutual Organizations in WAEMU member states, makes the following points:

  • Most of the population of the eight member states of the West African Economic and Monetary Union (WAEMU) have no social protection.
  • Mutual health insurance organizations have been trying to fill this gap.
  • The Support for Building a Regional Framework to Develop Mutual Health Organizations In WAEMU Countries project was designed in this context to create an enabling legal environment for developing mutual organizations.
  • The project initiated a participatory process that encouraged practitioners to become aware of the conditions of the actors and involve them in the law-making process.
  • The project resulted in a regulation that recognizes the specific status of mutual organizations.
  • This regulation makes mutual organizations more accountable.

The article, Role of Microinsurance in Disaster Management in India, examines the effects of disasters on the low-income population, and the various ways in which microinsurance can help in the pre-disaster, disaster-relief and post-disaster relief phases.

The case study section focuses on the impact of the ANIDASO microinsurance product.

The newsletter also features:

  • A glossary section;
  • Links to information on microinsurance;
  • Information on the Microinsurance Conference 2007;
  • Information about regulation, supervision and policy issues.
