Review of institutional fit, cost, implementation sites, and pros and cons of SAF software

This software review is sponsored by the Consultative Group to Assist the Poor (CGAP). The review identifies the vendor – SYSDE, and the customers:

  • San Jose – Costa Rica;
  • OTIV – Madagascar;
  • Fundacion Realidad – Mexico.

The review examines the institutional fit of the software, looking at:

  • Size of the microfinance institution (MFI);
  • Budget per user;
  • Information technology expertise required;
  • Functionality of the package.

The review states that the software product has been developed in Costa Rica and has been implemented in 94 MFIs. It lists the following advantages and disadvantages of the software:

  • Advantages:
    • A full feature set at a single price for all modules;
    • A comprehensive support network for users;
    • A secure transactional platform.
  • Disadvantages:
    • A complex system that requires a period of initiation;
    • Non-availability of a centralized single screen;
    • Lack of flexibility;
    • Insufficient on-line help;
    • Presence of minor bugs and discrepancies.

The review rates the software as follows:

  • Functionality: excellent.
  • Ease of use: too complex for untrained users.
  • Management reporting: not adequate to fully address customer needs.
  • Services: promptness of support is good.
  • Technical capabilities: strong and reliable.

The report concludes by presenting the following features of the software:

  • The cost summary.
