This document contains a short list of 30 formal financial institutions, as identified by CGAP, with established microfinance operations.
This document contains a list of thirty formal financial institutions that the Consultative Group to Assist the Poor (CGAP) has identified, with established microfinance operations. As per the document, the list:
- Excludes banks that were established for the express purpose of providing microfinance services;
- Is based on secondary and incomplete information, and is in no way exhaustive of the formal financial institutions that merit exploration for new or additional microfinance services.
The list slots institutions by:
- Country (in alphabetical order);
- Financial institution - financial bank subsidiary, equity building society, etc;
- Type/ownership - private bank, rural bank, cooperative, etc;
- Characteristics, including background, partners, statistics and contact details. For instance, in Cameroon, the document identifies Afriland First Bank as a private bank and describes its characteristics as follows:
- Background: Financial Bank created Finadev in November 1998 and launched a separate company in July 2000;
- Strategic partners were IFC, Dutch FMO, Lafayette Paricipations-Horus Banque ET Finances, European Investment Bank;
- Statistics: credit only; six branches, 11,685 active clients, 69% women; average loan outstanding $447, net profit: $13,900 in the first eighteen months;
