How to adapt cooperative principles in agricultural systems?
This paper describes 'Moshavs', which are village-based cooperatives having all of the village's residents as members of the cooperative. The author presents the following important features of a 'Moshav':
- Having a multipurpose character;
- Identifying completely with the village;
- Providing municipal services such as sewage and lighting;
- Identifying with the community;
- Members assisting mutually and taking the responsibility.
The author states that provision of credit, provision of inputs and marketing, is all essential to the agricultural production process, and presents the five stages in the development of a facilitative multipurpose cooperative:
- Production through employing resources;
- Credit, input and marketing support;
- Water distribution, crop-storage and processing facilities;
- Accountancy, pension, insurance and technical services to members;
- Overall community development.
Finally, the author concludes that, experience acquired in Israel with Moshavim and the resulting lessons derived from it can be of great value for the organization of traditional villages in Third World countries, and the development of cooperative systems using the stage-by-stage approach.
